Part of the sepia tone series, this oil painting is inspired by the rich surplus of characters in Occidental and the events that transpired during that magical yet peculiar summer. To the left we can see “Skeeter” a notorious local, climbing a tree to put a ribbon on the moon. Below that, a woman yields a samurai sword moments after her unfortunate attempt of stabbing a well-known musician’s cows. (The cows were not harmed and are doing well). The pied piper plays a tune attempting to reel in the madness. Front and center the locals play a Sunday game of wiffle ball in front of the Union Hotel, a historical local favorite. A witch can be seen riding her broom in the sky casting her magical energy over the town. The couple strolling through town is an ode to the artist’s self-representation bearing witness to the whimsy and mischievous events that transpired that summer. The owl, a mascot of the neighboring yet mysterious Bohemian Club, keeps a watchful eye over all.
