I was Hacked! A Who dun it?

THE RABBIT HOLE: A Post-Hack Collaboration

SEBASTOPOL, CA – December 19, 2025 – The Sebastopol Art Gallery is proud to announce an extraordinary, new exhibition, “THE RABBIT HOLE: A Post-Hack Collaboration,” featuring local digital artist Sam Roloff and the mysterious entity known only as ‘Anonymous.’ The show opens on Saturday, January 3, 2026, offering the public an unprecedented look at the intersection of digital security, appropriation, and artistic consent.

The genesis of this exhibition stems from a highly publicized, though harmless, breach that occurred years ago. A stealthy digital intrusion targeted Sam Roloff’s gallery space, resulting in the anonymous placement of a cryptic, grey flag installation. This audacious act—a digital strike made physical—left the local art scene buzzing with questions about security, privacy, and the unknown.

Years later, a new chapter in this compelling saga has been unveiled. The ‘Grey Flag Alliance’ hacker re-emerged to present a collection of large-scale canvases. These stunning prints are meticulously chosen and high-fidelity reproductions of Sam Roloff’s favorite unreleased PSD collages, created from their own files and printed with the artist’s full, albeit unconventional, consent. The resulting show is a fascinating dialogue between a digital artist and a digital outlaw, transforming an act of intrusion into a collaborative act of creation.

The Mystery Endures: Who is ‘Anonymous‘ this time?

While the canvases are officially authorized and celebrated by Roloff, the true identity of this masked entity remains an absolute mystery. In a statement released through an encrypted channel, the group’s representative hinted at their motivation: “We believe that true ownership in the digital age is an illusion. Sam’s work, beautiful and complex, deserved to escape the confines of his hard drive. We simply facilitated its liberation and celebration.”

The most pressing question on everyone’s mind—and the true spectacle of the opening—is whether the elusive hacker/artist will attend. The Sebastopol Art Gallery and Sam Roloff are confirming only that the artist, Sam Roloff, will be present. In true form, ‘Grey Flag Alliance‘ has neither confirmed nor denied any physical presence at the opening, stating that their contribution is the art itself.

They asked me “What does the gray flag mean to you, Sam Roloff?”

My reply. “I was confused and intrigued until I realized that the flag stands for anti-flag if you will. Non defensive and all inclusive devoid of colors and symbols that divide us.” -Sam Roloff
