Private collection of Dr. Britt Anderson PHD
This painting by Artist Sam Roloff is one of his earliest examples of his "Back-Story Underpainting" method where the artist paints with more expression and color at first. Then much like a "Time Capsule" each layer is painted over hidding nearly all the original work, look closely and you will still see hints of the past. He likens this method to an Archeologist digging through the layers of ground.

The Signature
The signature of "Sam Roloff" in the bottom right hand corner.
Seventh and Final Phase
Some green was added in thin layers of glaze in the middle of the painting. After that tried then a final glaze was added over the whole piece.
Sixth Phase
The painting at this time takes a dramatic turn. Being inspired by another recent painting titled "It used to be Red on Red".
Fifth Phase
It's hard to see from the photo but the artist added a thin layer of Gamblin's Cold Wax Medium over the whole piece. This photo also shows the full painting to see the scale.
Fourth Phase
Punched up the colors and went over all the pencil lines that Amelia made and made them darker with black oil paint. The artist also reworked the Piano Lessons section.
Third Phase
The artist at this time has fully taken control of the canvas, Amelia's work can still be scene but her work is done. The challenge here is to still leave as much of the childlike whimsical way and just paint around the objects rather than paint over them. The artist added the Black cat to the left.
Second Phase - detail part 2
Here is a close up of the artist playing basketball in a wheelchair.
Second Phase - detail
I was using a Blackberry with a Twitter ap called TwitterBerry, so I added a drawing of my Blackberry series 8800. I also use the Facebook app so I put in the familiar screen when posting updates. The line "Sam is..."
Second Phase
In this phase I started to add some items to the story. I added the Blackberry phone, piano lessons, dodge minvan, the golden age of tv and the self portrait of me in a wheelchair playing basketball.
The First phase
My daughter really helped me out with the first phase of this painting. I got a large canvas and told her to paint what ever she wanted. She made some kind of video game acted out which she describes in this video.
This is Amelia while she was painting "TwitterBerry".
