The Ghost of the Last Supper

The ghost of the last supper by artist Sam Roloff

This painting deals with the different divisions within the church since the inception, inspired by Bart Ehrman.

The composition was modeled directly after Da Vinci's Last Supper but that’s where the similarities stop. Each group of apostles deals with the differences amongst themselves not any of them relating with the central figure. The dialog is meant to be read from right to left.

Starting with the group on the right:

Group One, this group I like to call the "Wine and the Word". They are focused on the words of the bible rather than the Jesus who is in the room. They are seen here reading the torah. Looking in vain for prophecies like Isaiah 7:14.

Group Two, there are three in this group to represent the 3 wise men. Basically the group who believe that Jesus was ushering in the "Age of Aquarius". They can be seen here with symbols of the stars and a telescope.

Group Three, Jesus and his baby son. This group shows Jesus as the nurturer and entertains the possibility that Jesus was fully human and practiced procreation.

Group Four, The lovers. The young couple demonstrates the bond of love and believed that Jesus represents the core of all love.

Group Five, actually no group at all but rather one solo guy. This guy is scene holding a "spike" which was used in the Crucifixion that pierced the hand of Christ. His belief is in the physical evidence of the life of Jesus and that if it really happened then Jesus must have been who people said he was, years after his death.

Group Six, This group of two are lovers as well representing the bloodline of Jesus they see no issue with the contradiction of Jesus having a real father with a real bloodline and at the same time not being from blood but rather spirit. Which one is it? Blood or no blood. Man or God. Pick a side.

Group seven, The fighting couple. The idea here is to represent the need for argument in proving a case for Christ. It also reflects the ideas of “Might is Right”, the one who wins the argument wins the truth. Claims made by this group go something like this, since Christianity is so strong and main stream that it can’t be crazy.
