I was approached by The Olanders to paint a painting that would have their “Back-Story” within the layers of the piece. The original commission was for one large 6 x 4 foot painting, so I decided to do two paintings so that they could then choose which one they liked better. The one shown is the second of the two.

The stretcher bars were crafted by hand from a master wood builder, Erik Sorensen. The material that was stretched over the wood was bed sheet linen because of its fine quality and approximant size to an actual bed, keeping consistent with the “Love Story” theme. From here on the canvas would be seen as a bed as well as a blank canvas.

This one was less literal than the first one. This one started with cans of enamel paint from “Miller Paint” the paint was then dripped on with a brush in the same fashion as Jackson Pollack. Later I added the words “Nike” because the husband of the client works for Nike and I knew this is a large part of their life.

The swan represents the natural beauty of women while the goat symbolizes man and his rough exterior. The two together, share a timeless love story much like The Beauty and the Beast. The date 1967 which is the birth year of the clients and the artist is also the summer of love, so the date fits perfectly within the theme.

This painting was created when I was still at the San Francisco Art Institute. I think of it as my first painting, I have done others but they were much smaller. During this time at school I was studying print making so the method I used was heavily based on Etching. This approach can be scene by the thin layers of oil paint that was brushed on but then later whipped off after it was allowed to dry a bit, this leaves more paint in the texture of the surface. Then graphic was used to outline the figures.

It was later finished off when a glaze and then framed. The framing was done in Portland Oregon by ColumbiaArtandDrafting.com. They failed to glue the paper onto backing board correctly leaving some very noticeable bubbles.

This painting is now currently owned by Kevin Crawford owner of Urban Grind in Portland Oregon. The painting currently is being displayed privately in the conference room in the Urban Grind NE.

This painting was first inspired by a new app for my blackberry, TwitterBerry. I sent out a post to Twitter asking for an idea for a painting and said that I would take the next Tweet no matter what it is. This week in the news was full of interesting stories so I figured I would have some sweet pickings for ideas. But the truth was that I got a tweet from Anderson Cooper of CNN and it was "About our Show http://tinyurl.com/008bqf". Not very exciting but real.

Medium: Oil on Panel

Date: 1997 - 2009
Owned by Jeremy Roloff of Little People, Big World

This painting deals with the courtship rituals, where the woman in the center of the painting is being courted by two different young men. The young man to the left is on a Vespa Scooter sticking his tongue out, not at the young woman but at the viewer. To the far right is the older more classic approach of a Medieval Horse Rider Jousting for the victory of the woman. The woman in the center has yet to make up her mind in fact she seems preoccupied with the feeding of her pet dragon.

The painting was given as a gift to Jeremy Roloff and the meaning of it was explained on the tv show "Little People, Big World" on TLC.
